When asked to name a successful minority in the film and television industry who is not an actor, most people can only come up with a few names. No one ever talks about director Angela Robinson, TV director Sylvia Morales, academy award winning cinematographer Bill Dill, or acclaimed writer/director Mira Nair. A big reason there aren’t many aspiring women and minorities in the visual industry is because they have no role-models. Who does a young Latino have to look up to if they don’t know about Alejandro González Iñárritu or Guillermo Del Toro? These successes aren’t as easily accessible as musicians or athletes and so we find students standing on the threshold of graduation with limited possibilities. Lodge Street Films is here to expand those possibilities.
One Alliance is the student focused part of Lodge Street Films that will include three programs: Action! Is an academically oriented portfolio building program, Film Step is more of a hands on experience where students learn different technical aspects of filmmaking, and finally Insider’s Edge a program where students learn useful information from people already in the industry.
Filmstep is an interactive program that puts students directly “on set”. During Filmstep sessions participants will have the opportunity to learn several techniques from grip work to production design. Each bi-monthly session will focus on a different topic and students will be able to apply those skills in the current or upcoming Lodge Street Films project. In addition, Filmstep will be a tool to help students produce their own projects.
Insider’s Edge is a program designed to bring student and industry professional together in an informative setting. Lodge Street Films will bring our special guests to a local venue where students will view an example of their work and have the opportunity to ask questions about the business and how to be successful. By surveying from a wide spectrum of film and television careers students will also be able to see what the industry has to offer and how to get there.
